Puerto de la Cruz is a small, yet vibrant city on Tenerife's north coast just 30 minutes away from the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Once a fishing village surrounded by tropical fruit plantations, the city began to take shape in the 1950s when tourism started to be promoted and has not looked back since. Puerto de la Cruz attracts the more refined, sophisticated and mature tourists who come to relax, unwind and enjoy the island's treasures.
The city boasts a quaint harbour with fishing boats and a medieval old quarter that takes you back in time. Along the narrow streets, you will find plenty of authentic tapas bars and along the beachfront strip, there are more international restaurants and cocktail bars with live music making for a more lively evenings entertainment.
Playa de Jardin and Playa Martiánez are the main beaches of Puerto de la Cruz located either side of the harbour and both of which have black volcanic sand - a common occurance of all the northern shore beaches. The facilities are excellent with changing rooms, restrooms, sunloungers and lifeguard. Behind Playa de Jardin, the Martianez lido entices you up to it's tropical gardens, waterfalls, sun terraces, bars and restaurants and is the perfect place to relax.
