It is a fascinating city that was not always the capital as in the early 1900s, the British swapped the old capital of Ciutadella on the west coast to Mahon. The switch was made because of Mahon's strategic position away from mainland Spain and because it has an attractive port with very deep channels that can cater for the largest ships.
Mahon is a bustling city which boasts a fantastic covered fish market, lots of excellent bars, cafés and restaurants serving local and international dishes and has a lively night scene.
