Gordes holidays, Provence Holiday rentals - villas & holiday homes to rent in Gordes
Gordes is listed as one of "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" with its narrow cobbled streets (called "Caldes") winding their way through the tall houses that cling on to the rock face and cliffs of this hilltop retreat. The village is rich in culture and history dating back to the Gallo-Roman days and at its centre stands the impressive castle built in 1301, a reminder of the battles that were won and lost during the religious wars. Today, the castle is partly a museum and art gallery.
Gordes sits on top of a hill at an altitude ranging between 110m and 635m which explains why there are so many steps and steep cobbled streets in the village! It enjoys a Mediterranean climate with dry summers and damp wet winters. During the warm summer months, temperatures can reach into the mid 30s whereas during winter, it can drop below freezing with snow frequently seen on the mountain peaks of the Monts de Vaucluse.
